Two-time world champion Paulie Ayala began Punching Out Parkinson's in September of 2011 as an added program to his gym, University of Hard Knocks. Paulie has been in the sport of boxing for 42 1/2 years. With his experience and compassion for the sport he has dedicated his time and expertise in designing a regimen for the many people who suffer from Parkinson's disease.
The boxing regimen is more than just another "workout routine". The workout is designed to improve an individual's movement, speed, eye to hand coordination, balance, strength, speech, endurance and self-image-all the areas PD takes away.
POP is a tight community. Always welcoming to newcomers, eager to share their knowledge and struggles with one another, as they are all in this fight together.
I feel better for the rest of the day after a POP class.
I joined Punching Out Parkinson's six years ago, shortly after I was diagnosed. My doctor and I agree that the advancement of the symptoms of the disease have been significantly slowed due to my participation in this program. The other members are a family made up of people who never give up their battle with the disease and constantly inspire me.
I was diagnosed with Parkinson's six years ago. When my neurologist advised me to join Paulie's boxing program for PD I was reluctant. Now, after being a part of it all these years I've had to drop out because of a shoulder injury. The confidence, strength and mobility I've gained from the workout three days a week in my mind is the best thing I've done for myself. The added bonus of a large support group there and the friends I've made are something that can't be replaced. I miss my time there every week but I'll be back.

The ability to group exercise and co-mingle with others facing the same issue. An avenue to exercise and mantain mobility. The people are more than just supportive at POP they project a caring attitude when its really needed can't say how wonderful they all are.
Camaraderie with others. Understanding and patient staff, keeps us moving.
My best experience in POP classes is working with Paulie who makes challenging workouts fun. POP classes are the highlight of my week, being with some of the best people I know. The serious side is knowing we have a disease to beat and we're all in this together.
